A destination: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The 1971 novel follows Lyman Ward, a retired professor of history, who has lost touch with his son and living family and decides to write about his frontier-era grandparents. Despite being wheelchair-bound from a crippling bone disease, Ward embarks on a search to rediscover his grandmother, who made her own journey to Grass Valley nearly a hundred years earlier. A film: 8 1/2 by Federico Fellini
8 ½ is a 1963 Italian surrealist comedy-drama by Federico Fellini. Troubled Italian filmmaker Guido Anselmi, played by Marcello Mastroianni, suffers from a lack of creativity as he attempts to direct a science-fiction film. 8 ½ won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design (black-and-white).
